Supporting Your Children Effectively During A Divorce

PJE Solicitors • Feb 15, 2024

Divorce is an emotionally challenging time for any family. Whether your split from your partner was amicable or not, separating can be a drastic change that may affect your family. If you’re concerned about supporting your children through a divorce, but don’t know where to start, our blog is here to help. We’re diving into some of the basics when it comes to supporting your kids through a divorce.

Supporting Your Children Effectively

You may feel lost when it comes to supporting your children, but there are very basic things you can do to help ease the process of the divorce.

Listening

Listening to your children and validating their emotions is extremely important during such a turbulent time. Making your children feel comfortable enough to come to you can help them open up and express themselves. No matter what they’re feeling, it’s important for them to feel heard.

Showing Love

Don’t stop showing your children affection and love. This can make them feel upset, and many children tend to blame themselves, so keeping up the cuddles and quality time can reinforce that things are going to be okay. Reminding your children that you love them will help to maintain their confidence.

Keep It Civil

Try not to speak badly about your ex in front of your children. It can be a stressful time as it is for your kids, without having to hear negative comments about their parents. Keeping things civil in front of them will allow them to move through the divorce without any additional negativity.

Routine

Keeping a routine is an excellent way to support your children. Divorce leaves a range of unknown factors for children, and they can often feel as though their whole lives are falling apart. Maintaining a solid routine, like school pick-up, dinner time, bath time and bedtime can show your kids that life will continue to be normal.

Keep An Eye Out

In the midst of divorce, you may be preoccupied and distracted, but it’s crucial that you keep an eye on your children. From open communication to checking in, keeping an eye on their behaviour and moods will help you monitor how they are coping. And, if you’re not sure how they’re doing, just check in to show some love and care.
