The Emotional Toll of Divorce: How to Cope and Heal

PJE Solicitors • Apr 03, 2024

Divorce is a hugely stressful and upsetting time for anyone to go through. Your life will be changing massively and it’s normal to go through a stage of grief before you are truly able to begin healing. As divorce lawyers, we want you to know you aren’t alone and we’re here to help you through all the stages of divorce mediation. But besides the legal side, there are many ways you can begin healing the toll of a divorce.

Keep reading to learn how.

Understanding the emotional impact

Divorce can impact individuals in a variety of ways - both emotionally and physically. Throughout the divorce and for some time afterwards. Some natural emotions include:

  • Anger: Whether this is directed at the other spouse or even at yourself, it’s normal and quite common.
  • Fear: Not knowing what the future brings can be scary and you may find yourself worrying about what your life will look like.
  • Sadness: Divorce will commonly bring a sense of loss and sadness as the relationship ends.
  • Guilt: You may find yourself mulling over what you could have done differently or how the divorce may affect your children if you have any.

Throughout this difficult time, it’s important to seek support and help to process your emotions and avoid getting stuck in a negative cycle.

Coping strategies

Here are some methods you can implement to promote healthy healing.

Seek counselling

If you are going through a divorce, it may be a good idea to seek help from a professional who is able to help you process your emotions and provide support for any difficult decisions you may need to make. They can also teach you coping skills and strategies for managing anxiety and depression.

Join a support group

Seeking support from a group of people who are going through the exact same thing can be very helpful. It is able to make you feel less lonely and voice feelings that are likely felt by others in the group.

Prioritise self-care

While it can feel tempting to not look after yourself properly, stay in bed and eat junk food, you will thank yourself in the long run if you are able to eat healthily, exercise and give yourself some time to do the things you love.
