Questions to Ask When Hiring a Divorce Lawyer

PJE Solicitors • Jun 22, 2022

The decision to terminate a marriage can be difficult, whether you’re the one to start the process or not. However, one thing you must do is hire the best divorce lawyer possible. This will ensure the process goes smoothly and you are through the other side with minimal trauma.

When you first speak with a lawyer, it’s important to note that you do not have to hire the first person you meet. You want someone who is not only a good match personality-wise but someone with the experience needed to complete the divorce proceedings.

Questions to Ask a Divorce Lawyer

You should arrange a quick meeting with your potential divorce lawyer. During the meeting, you can ask the following questions:

How many divorce cases have you worked on? It’s best to have someone who has experience with divorces, rather than a brand-new person.

How frequently do you settle out-of-court? You’ll find that if your divorce goes to court, it can take longer to resolve everything. A high number of settlements is a good sign for a lawyer.

Do you have any connection to my spouse or their lawyer? Avoid anyone with connections to others in the proceedings, as this can affect the outcome of the divorce.

Do you have experience in a high conflict divorce? If you believe things will become heated during your divorce, you should ensure your lawyer is able to manage this. They will need different techniques than those used in more peaceful divorces.

How long do you think my case will take? Most lawyers can give you a guesstimate as to how long it should take to manage your case. This is not set in stone, but it will help you get a better feel for how different people work.

What are your fees? It’s important to have a lawyer who can work within your budget. There’s no reason to spend time vetting them if they are more expensive than you can afford. However, you may also request that the lawyer ask the court to pass any costs on to your spouse.
